I enjoyed the work I did for this company ladt summer, but I was recently told during a phone call made to Employment Specialists to 'go to my Service Canada account' for my T4 for the 2021 tax year. On a subsequent phone call, I was told by a rep at their New Westminster office to 'get my T4 from my CRA account' and I was informed that their company does not mail out T4's.
Service Canada does not post T4's from private companies. CRA does, in most cases, but there is a delay to access, well past February 28.
And you need a CRA account to obtain the information..
CRA regulation mandates employers are responsible for supplying T4's to their employees by February 28.
Employers must supply the T4 to the employee either by mail, in person, or through a secured electronic portal that the EMPLOYER provides, such as a secured HR site. Typically, the employer supplies a portal on their website (HR portal) that the employee accesses by signing in with an employee number and password.
The employee must be both:
A) aware of the secure portal and how to access it, and
B) agree to access their tax info from this electronic portal.
The above CRA regs serve an important purpose.
T4 information is essential information.
Employees cannot submit an income tax return late, as CRA imposes penalties on late filers who owe funds. Besides the need for T4 information in order to avoid potential penaties, employees need T4 information to understand their benefits and responsibilities relating to payments.
If your CRA return is submitted late, GIS and/or OAP payments are impacted.
Library computer systems are routinely hacked, and many Canadians simply can't access CRA online accounts as they don't possess one. This particularly applies to lower income groups, and the temporary workforce that Employment Specialists utilizes. Further, many low income workers do not own laptops, printers, and Wifi is often a luxury.
The employees who work at Employment Specialists are paid a substantially lower hourly rate than what is charged to the company they end up being sent to.
All in all, considerably more than a postage stamp.
